Sculptures

In the artworks of Ahmed Nadalian, many sculptures are seen using natural stones, metal, salt and useless object. Most of the sculptures follow the natural form or are formed from worthless materials.

As a result of living in nature, I sought a local material or medium from the landscape to convey my thoughts. The river stones, which could be found nearby to our camp, best suited my concepts. When I walked on the edge of river, I thought of how water with all its softness can change the shape of stones.

I became convinced that I could do the same. I began by carving the stones with primitive tools and used the harder stones to polish the softer ones.

My early carved stone works depicted animals. Gradually the mother and child entered into my carvings. A mother is the foundation of love and kindness.  She is both lover and beloved. Love is the essence of creation, Love is the source of creation and its continuity is rooted in love.

Sometimes I install my sculptures (the goddess of water) in the river environment. Water gives life to all creatures in the earth. In all cultures water is used in rituals for cleaning the body. Water is also a metaphor for purifying the soul. The belief was the goddess purified all water on earth, and even the milk from a mother’s breast. It is important to understand that I, myself, convey my concept, in the present time, in various contexts, justifications, backgrounds and achievements.
